I’ve been known to slice a grapefruit for the aroma over the actual eating of the fruit. Or peel an orange. Or zest a lemon.
Among the 101 uses for lemons, for me, the taste of fresh lemon juice wins. Few foods add such magical flavor as the lemon.
Here’s how to make this day and many more days tastier, fresher and a little brighter with lemons:
First, buy a bag of lemons. Maybe a dozen or so. They’re available all year. If you choose to ‘buy USA‘ check the little sticker on the lemon. Our season is usually early winter.
Second, squeeze all but one lemon for juice. We’ll get back to that one later. I speed up the juicing with the attachment on my Kitchen Aid. A hand held citrus squeezer doesn’t take long either. Rolling the lemon with gentle pressure on the counter first loosens up the juice.
Freeze the juice in plastic ice cube trays. (I like cylinder shaped ice cube trays for this. When removed from the tray, they take up very little freezer space.) Store the frozen cubes in small baggies in the freezer. Just thaw a cube for fresh juice. The microwave can liquify a juice cube in a matter of seconds.
Third, place the rinds in a large baggie. Put those in the freezer, too. When a recipe calls for lemon zest I save myself a trip to the store by zesting a frozen rind.

- The natural marriage of lemons and fish is divine. Want to eat more fish? You already have the healthiest condiment available. Want to get real nutrients from real food? The vitamin C in the lemon juice optimizes the absorption of the precise type and amount of iron in the fish. Pretty awesome, huh?
- Going green? Nothing is wasted on those lemons. The rinds are a convenient garbage disposal deodorizer. Year round, you can toss a rind or two down the drain. Viola! Instant energizing aroma and a cleaner disposal.
Now, what to do with that one saved lemon…
Reward yourself for this domestic accomplishment by adding a couple slices of lemon to a tall glass of ice water.
While you sip on that, congratulate yourself for your creative amazingness. In the long run, you just saved yourself time and money.
This is an ideal time to make fish for dinner using your last fresh lemon. Juice half and pour it into a pretty little cream pitcher for the table. Cut the other half into slices. Twist the slices into an attractive garnish for the fish. There you have it. A healthy, appealing and very flavorful fish dish.
